One interpretation of Breathless is that it is a film about love in the modern world, where lovers know little about each others' past, have trouble communicating, follow their impulsive longings, only to end up betrayed at the end. Is there more to this take on modern romance? Is there something deeper in Michel and Patricia's relationship? Or is there something less? Is love even possible in the shadow of the atomic bomb and the Cold War? (Don't forget that Michel has other girlfriends and Patricia spent the evening -- and might have slept with -- her editor).

ReplyDeleteJean-Luc Godard's 1960s French film Breathless shows love in a very realistic way for very unrealistic circumstances. It is depicted as complicated through the difficult and questionable relationship between the main characters, Michel and Patricia, and reflecting the complex nature of human emotions and relationships in the 1960s. The relationship between Michel and Patricia is portrayed as very contradictory and unstable. Despite their evident passion and care, their relationship is underlined by jealousy, mistrust, and extreme emotional detachment. In one scene, Patricia and Michel rest in Patricia’s apartment. Michel had not been invited, but he had still shown up. By today’s standards, this would be seen as creepy unless they were in a very tight knit relationship. However, by Patricia’s reaction, it’s clear to see that she was not pleased with his sudden arrival. This leads to a very long scene during which Michel has very little to say other than “I want to sleep with you”. It’s clear that Patricia is leading the conversation, bringing up topics such as regret and loneliness but Michel brushes these off as silly, instead opting to touch her in a way that is clearly not fully consented to. This lays the groundwork for a later scene where Patricia and Michel are in a somewhat similar situation. However, this scene has much higher stakes as the audience is made aware that the police are to arrive soon to arrest Michel. Patricia walks through the room, with the camera following her in a way rarely seen in the rest of the movie. She talks about a variety of things that caused her to do it but it’s clear that she cannot in good faith say that she loves him. This reflects the earlier scene, in which she gave a genuine effort to find the love she had been promised from Michel. However, just like before, Michel refuses to listen which shows that he never truly loved her, at least, not in the way she loved him. While she had been seeking for a genuine connection, one that she couldn’t find with her editor, Michel was only interested in her body and her looks. This reflects his presented character, a man who uses women for personal gain and proceeds to rob them blind (in some cases, as we see earlier, literally). This “love” was never truly love to Michel, instead fitting more under the category of “lust”. This very seriously topic is somewhat out of place in an otherwise exaggerated film where people lightly jog after being shot in the spine. However, when looking at the time, it becomes evident that maybe the real world is just as crazy. With the looming threat of nuclear warfare via the Cold War, the real world could be considered just as ridiculous as the one seen in Breathless. With this fact in mind, the presence of such a serious moral dilemma as “what truly is love” in a ridiculous world isn’t as jarring as the world isn’t really as crazy as it seems.
ReplyDeleteWhile one interpretation of the film Breathless is as a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of impulsive, self-centered love in the modern world, there are also deeper and more nuanced aspects to Michel and Patricia's relationship that are worth exploring.
ReplyDeleteOne important aspect of Michel and Patricia's relationship is the way in which they both struggle to properly communicate with each other. Michel is a self-centered and impulsive character who often acts without thinking. Patricia is a guarded and enigmatic character who keeps her emotions close to the chest. Both characters seem to be searching for a deeper and more meaningful relationship, but they are unable to fully articulate what that is or how to achieve it. In many ways, Michel and Patricia's relationship is a reflection of the larger cultural anxieties of the time. The atomic bomb and the Cold War had created a sense of unease and uncertainty in the world, and many people felt a sense of disconnection and isolation as a result. Michel and Patricia's inability to connect with each other mirrors this larger sense of disconnection, and suggests that love may be more difficult to achieve in the shadow of these larger historical forces. At the same time, there are moments in the film when Michel and Patricia's relationship seems to transcend these limitations. For example, there is a scene where they are lying in bed together, and Michel asks Patricia to tell him a story. She initially resists, but eventually relents and tells him a story about a man who falls in love with a woman who is already married. The story is both a reflection of their own relationship and a critique of it, and it suggests that there is a deeper connection between them that goes beyond their immediate circumstances.
Another aspect of Michel and Patricia's relationship that is worth exploring is the way in which they are both involved with other people. Michel has several other girlfriends throughout the course of the film, and Patricia is involved with her editor. These other relationships complicate their own relationship, and suggest that love may be more complicated and messy than we initially realize. Despite these complications, however, there is a sense that Michel and Patricia are drawn to each other in a way that is difficult to explain. They are both searching for something deeper in their lives, and they seem to find that in each other, even if they are unable to fully articulate what that is or how to achieve it.
Breathless explores the complexities and ambiguities of modern romance, and while there are certainly elements of the film that suggest that love may be more difficult to achieve in the modern world, there are also moments of connection and transcendence that suggest that it is still possible. Ultimately, the film leaves us with more questions than answers about love and relationships, but that is precisely what makes it such a timeless work of art.
