His Girl Friday charts the marriage and divorce and remarriage of Walter and Hildy and the engagement -- and near marriage -- of Hildy and Bruce. The film His Girl Friday demonstrates the complexity of marriage with feminine ideals. Hildy is a complex character. She hopes for the stereotypical suburban housewife life, so she connects with Bruce. Bruce can give her this mundane life. But, she is drawn back to her ex Walter. Along with Walter comes her old career as a news reporter. Although Hildy does not get the housewife life she hoped for with Walter, she lives a more exciting life. She also gets to discover herself as working women in a predominantly male workforce. She does not get the same respect as the men. For example, Hildy is always referred to as a newsman. But, this is a start for women at this time. Walter and Hildy’s relationship clearly is not perfect considering they divorced, but they have so much chemistry. I don’t know if it is love or just lust but they have significantly more chemistry than Hildy and Walter. This makes me wonder who the best kind of spouse is. Is it better for a simple easy sprouse like Bruce, or an intense relationship with someone like Walter. Personally, I would prefer an exciting spouse similar to Hildy. Bruce is bland and boring but with Walter they are able to banter off of each other. It seems as though they are constantly arguing with each other which they often are but, in a relationship. I would prefer to feel comfortable with someone so that I can share everything. Rather than feeling like I need to be perfect like Hildy may feel with Bruce. This film displays the difficulty of relationships while maintaining feminine theories.
